GP Summary - how to score every time!
Is summary writing about paraphrasing every word? Why can’t I get the full 8 marks consistently? These are common challenges you may face. Most students by JC2 understand summary writing…the rules, the process; but many still find their marks hovering 4/5…. Okay, I have a few things to say about that.
Understand the question clearly
First things first, what is the question? I know it sounds stupid for me to be so blunt about it but you’d be surprised by the number of students who start thinking they know, and get a little lost somewhere along the way. An easy way to make sure you are focused would be to answer the question from the get go. For example, if the question says “Summarise the benefits of urban regeneration”, start with, “The benefits are ….” Of course you’d have scoured through the passage for relevant points before you start writing.
Include All Relevant Points in Your Summary
One thing to note: good summaries are often much more detailed than you think. Students often say, oh, I didn’t include those points because I ran out of words (after they reach the 120 word limit). That’s the problem as well. You have to have ALL the points annotated before jumping into writing. That’s why they call it a summary and not a recount of the story.
Select the Right Points - Which are they?
Another observation: many students know they need 10 points, and think to themselves, oh hey! I’ve got my 10 points and that’s good enough. To that, I have to say you may not know if your 10 are the correct 10. So, just answer the question - fully.
Use Cohesive Language to Enhance Readability
Bear in mind you will be marked on both your content and your language here. Using simple connectors, transitions or signallers like however, moreover, hence etc …help weave a cohesive summary, making it an easy, convincing read for the examiner. It is not about paraphrasing every word. Rather, maintain the author’s intent and ideas. Imagine having to explain what was written to someone who doesn’t quite understand the way it was written in the passage. Also, please reserve your opinion. You can take that instead, to your AQ or Application Question.
